MADRID 3 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Lebanese Army has confirmed that a soldier was injured this Friday due to a shooting incident with a group of Syrians at an illegal border crossing.
The shooting occurred in the Maaraboun area, Baalbek region (in eastern Lebanon), according to a military statement, when the group of Syrians “tried to open an illegal border crossing with a bulldozer.”
The Lebanese military first fired warning shots, according to the explanation provided by the Lebanese Army Command on its X social network account, at which point the Syrians proceeded to shoot at the soldiers.
“The Syrians opened fire on the soldiers, wounding one of them and provoking a confrontation between both sides,” as confirmed by the Lebanese Army in its statement, where it announced the beginning of “strict military measures” between the forces deployed in the sector.
The group of Syrians has not been officially identified but Syrian sources from the Lebanese network MTV point out that it could be a gang of smugglers who, until the fall last month of the government of former Syrian president Bashar al Assad, operated freely between the border between both countries.
