A Tunisian opposition politician who tried to run in the elections is attacked with acid

MADRID 20 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Tunisian opposition politician Abdelatif Meki, former leader of the moderate Islamist party Ennahda, has suffered an acid attack that caused him serious burns and remains hospitalized, according to his current party.

Mekki, former Minister of Health, tried to run in the presidential elections on October 6, but was disqualified, like other opposition candidates who wanted to compete at the polls against President Kais Saied.

Mekki’s party has accused the authorities of ignoring the threats reported by the politician and his family in recent months, although the exact reasons for Tuesday’s attack have not been revealed, the Bloomberg agency reports.

The Prosecutor’s Office has already issued two arrest warrants for these events, which took place at the opponent’s home, according to sources consulted by the Tunisian radio station Mosaique FM and who indicate that the two people named now had already been previously denounced.
