A court in Seoul issued an arrest warrant this Tuesday against South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol – temporarily dismissed from office – for his declaration of martial law on December 3, after a joint investigation team requested it on charges of insurrection and abuse of power.
The Seoul Western District Court has approved the petition filed this Monday by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO), the Police and the investigation unit of the Ministry of Defense against Yoon, after he ignored the three summons to appear on the controversial martial law decree.
The agency has also approved a search warrant for the presidential residence in Yongsan, in the South Korean capital, as confirmed by the state Yonhap news agency.
With this decision, the court has challenged the statements of Yoon and his defense about an alleged lack of jurisdiction of the CIO to investigate the insurrection, for which they alleged that the request for the arrest warrant was illegal.
Likewise, the organization has rejected the president’s argument to be absent from the interrogations, citing lack of personal security as president. In fact, shortly after the arrest warrant against Yoon was made public, the Presidential Security Service has announced that it will take measures to handle the warrant in accordance with the legal process.
Yoon was removed from office in a motion passed by the National Assembly last Friday. The Constitutional Court of the Asian country must decide between now and June whether to restore his powers or permanently disqualify him.
