As The Race To Buy Chelsea Heats Up, The Ricketts Family Travels To London.

The Ricketts Family, owners of the Chicago Cubs, is heading to London to meet with key Chelsea stakeholders as they wait to learn if they are among the favored bidders for the club. The Raine Group is meeting right now to create a shortlist of the best-positioned groups to take control of Chelsea. An announcement is expected soon, and ownership of the Premier League club will change hands within a month.

According to Sky Sports, the Ricketts' trip is intended to meet with key Chelsea stakeholders such as the Chelsea Supporters' Trust and the Chelsea Pitch Owners. However, the Ricketts have come under fire from Brian Wolff, the president of the Chelsea Chicago Supporters Club, who published an open letter on Twitter on Monday condemning the Ricketts' proposed ownership of Chelsea.

"As the President of the Chelsea Chicago Supporters Club and the Overseas Representative for the Chelsea Fans' Forum, I've had a unique position hearing what supporters in Chicago and around the world have to say about the Ricketts family's quest for Chelsea," he wrote. I can report that the overwhelming majority of public opinion has been negative.

"The Ricketts' political donations, fundraising, and support for politicians who do not share Chelsea Football Club's and its supporters' inclusive beliefs are entirely incongruous with the Club's and the Chelsea Foundation's 19 years of excellent work, most notably, as a pioneer in establishing a Living Wage and initiatives to safeguard and promote equality for BAME and LGBTQ+ populations.

"Their ownership of the Chicago Cubs baseball team and the renovation of Wrigley Field creates severe doubts about their ability to build on the Club's on-field success, as well as the Chelsea Pitch Owners' ability to keep Chelsea Football Club playing at Stamford Bridge as our everlasting home."

"On behalf of countless Chelsea supporters around the world, I implore you to reject their bid for Chelsea Football Club ownership in favor of others who will commit to not only building on the last two decades of investment in players and infrastructure, but also – and perhaps more importantly – the investment in supporters and the values that we hold dear."

The last phrase alludes to an incident in January 2020, when Chicago Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts was booed by fans as he launched a new baseball network, citing a perceived lack of activity during the offseason. In the meanwhile, Tom Ricketts spoke with Conservative MP for Chelsea Greg Hands on the phone on Monday before flying to the UK.

The Ricketts family is one of several American parties interested in bidding for Chelsea. The Chicago Cubs' owners are backed by Ken Griffin, a wealthy hedge fund manager who is the most valued person involved in the Chelsea bidding process. The family is joined in the contest by a group led by Todd Boehly, a part-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, which represents another American powerhouse in the competition.

"Some Chelsea supporters have reacted angrily to the Ricketts family's revealed Islamophobic emails exchanged by the family's 80-year-old patriarch Joe Ricketts between 2009 and 2013." Joe Ricketts has apologized for the emails that were released on the Splinter News website in 2019. He is not a member of Chelsea's bid, and he is not affiliated with the Chicago Cubs.

"Tom Ricketts is leading the Ricketts family's quest for Chelsea. Laura and Todd, two of his other children, are also active. Todd Ricketts is the Republican National Committee's finance chairman. In November 2016, Donald Trump nominated him to be the US Deputy Secretary of Commerce. He is a Republican Party donor.

"Laura Ricketts is a Democratic Party donor and former corporate lawyer who has pushed for LGBTQ+ rights." Chelsea has a number of Muslim players, including N'Golo Kante, Antonio Rudiger, Hakim Ziyech, and Malang Sarr, as well as millions of Muslim fans worldwide."
