At least 16 dead and some 16,000 families affected by the rainy season in Bolivia

MADRID 8 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Bolivian authorities have reported this Wednesday the death of at least 16 people as a result of the rainy season in the country, from November to date, which has left some 16,000 families affected.

The Vice Minister of Civil Defense, Juan Carlos Calvimontes, has added that the last fatality that has been recorded is an eight-month-old baby who was swept away by the Piquendo River in the municipality of Alto Beni, in La Paz.

Calvimontes has detailed that the heavy rainfall has affected eight of the nine departments of Bolivia, except Oruro. In addition, three municipalities have declared a state of emergency. La Paz, Pando and Cochabamba now focus the greatest attention on the danger of landslides and river flooding.

Likewise, it has reported that some 16,000 families have been affected to a greater or lesser extent by rainfall, the consequences of which have completely destroyed some 200 homes and another 350 partially.

Calvimontes said that at the moment some 600 families who were in a situation of serious risk have been assisted and some 18.3 tons of humanitarian aid have been delivered.
