BERLIN Dec. 29 (DPA/EP) –
The German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, hopes that the future German Government will continue to support Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression, as she stated in an interview with the Sunday newspaper ‘Bild am Sonntag’.
“No government that cares about the security of Germany and Europe will abandon the people of Ukraine to their fate,” said Baerbock, “because only a just peace for Ukraine will ensure our peace and freedom in Europe.”
The minister stressed that Ukraine can count on Germany, even beyond the general elections. February 24 marks the third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The day before, early elections will take place in Germany.
The brutality of the attacks in recent days shows that Russian President Vladimir Putin remains “bent on absolute destruction,” Baerbock said. “Supporting Ukraine therefore remains absolute self-protection of our own security and peace.”
“True peace means that no injustice is committed,” the minister asserted, noting that Ukraine needs more than words for a negotiated peace solution.
“Only reliable, long-term and, above all, truly resilient security guarantees will prevent Putin from further invasions. Only then will there be sustainable peace and stability in Ukraine,” Baerbock pointed out.
