But in order to sign new players, it is essential for Barça to offload their unwanted stars. They have recently sanctioned the sale of Philippe Coutinho on a €20 million deal to Aston Villa
Coach Xavi Hernandez has identified many other unwanted stars within the squad, all of who are likely to be offloaded in the summer transfer window.
However, according to Catalunya Radio, not every fringe player is on board with the idea of leaving Barcelona in the summer. Two players, in particular, have shown no intention to leave the club and are willing to play out their contracts.
The players in question are Martin Braithwaite and Miralem Pjanic. Both of them have been deemed surplus to the requirements next season, with Xavi keen on offloading them in the summer in order to make way for new signings.
Pjanic is coming on the back of a loan spell at Besiktas. He has already attracted interest from Napoli, whereas Braithwaite is rated highly by few of the Spanish clubs, in light of his positive goalscoring record in La Liga.
But neither of the two players is entertaining the idea of leaving Barcelona. They want to remain at Camp Nou and play out their respective contracts, which do not expire until 2024.
Pjanic and Braithwaite’s reluctance in leaving Barça is indicative of the lavish salaries handed to them by the previous management. The club experienced a similar scenario with Ousmane Dembele in January, with the winger refusing to leave despite pressure from the board.
Joan Laporta pressed hard to force Dembele out in January, and it appears he might need to adopt a similar strategy in order to offload Braithwaite and Pjanic, as we near the summer transfer window.
