All the very latest concerning the future of Lyon midfielder Bruno Guimaraes as Arsenal and Newcastle United attempt to get a deal sealed by deadline day

Arsenal are striving to add to their midfield options ahead of the January transfer window slamming shut next week.

The Gunners have endured some real problems in the centre of the park due to a combination of injuries, African Cup of Nations call-ups and suspensions.

In an attempt to alleviate the current strain on Mikel Arteta's squad, Arsenal have been linked with a number of midfield options including Juventus' Arthur Melo, as well as ex-Liverpool man Georginio Wijnaldum.

One man who the Gunners hold a historical interest in though is Lyon star Bruno Guimaraes. He has consistently been linked with a switch to the Emirates Stadium - including throughout the past month.

With that being said, we takes a look at the latest updates on the Brazilian's current situation and whether his future could potentially lie in north London.

Talks underway

According to transfer guru Nicolo Schira, Arsenal have started talks with Lyon as Edu looks to secure a move for the talented midfielder.

He tweeted: "Arsenal are really interested in Lyon midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. Edu loves him and has opened talks to try and sign him."

Schira added: "Let’s see what happens. In the transfer market all the players have a price.

"It’s not a simple deal for Arsenal, but Edu is working and - if arrives an important bid - Aulas could sell Bruno Guimaraes."

Price-tag revealed

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Guimaraes would cost at least €45million (£37.6million) this month, whilst also confirming that Arsenal were interested in the Brazilian.

Speaking about the 24-year-old, Romano tweeted: "OL (Lyon) won’t accept less than €45million fee to sell Bruno in January - definitely not easy.

"OL are also offering him a new deal until 2026 but there’s no agreement yet.

"Arsenal are following him since long time - there’s still nothing for Jan window."

Premier League competition

It is not just the Gunners eyeing a move for the Brazilian, however.

Both Everton and Newcastle have Guimaraes in their sights during the January transfer window, with the newly-wealthy Magpies likely to cause Arsenal the biggest headache over a deal.

Like Mikel Arteta and co. the Premier League competitors were both reportedly impressed with the players' performances during the summer Olympics.

Approach confirmed

Guimaraes confirmed that he received an approach from Arsenal in the summer of 2021.

"Arsenal approached my agent, but there was no offer. My aim, and I made it clear to Juninho, is to win a title with Lyon," he told Globo.

"The fans have not had one for a long time. We have the Coupe de France, the Europa League and the league. It is difficult with the level that PSG are at, but anything can happen."

However, Guimaraes refused to rule out a move to England in the future.

"My aim is to win a title here, but I have never hidden my desire to play in the Premier League," he added.

Juventus join race

According to Goal Brazilian, Italian side Juventus are interested in signing Guimaraes and have sent Lyon a loan proposal for the deep-lying playmaker.

However, the report does claim that the French outfit want any loan deal to include an obligation to buy of €45million (£37.5million), something that Juve are unlikely to agree to considering their current financial situation.

The Serie A giants beat Arsenal to the signing of Manuel Locatelli in the summer, with the former Sassuolo man reportedly garnering interest from the Gunners before joining Massimiliano Allegri's side in August.

Newcastle have bid accepted

Whilst one team in black and white have seemingly edged themselves into contention for Guimaraes signature, another closer to home has also made a play for the Brazilian's services.

As per reports in France, Newcastle United lodged a €40million (£33million) offer for the midfielder in order to tempt him into a switch to St James' Park.

Meanwhile, Globo Esporte have reported that the Magpies have seen that aforementioned bid accepted in what is sure to be a major blow in Arsenal's hopes of signing Guimaraes.
