Canadian ministers travel to the US to defend to Trump’s team that tariffs will not be necessary

MADRID 28 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Canadian Minister of Finance, Dominic LeBlanc, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Melanie Joly, have traveled to Florida (United States) to defend before the team of the president-elect, Donald Trump, that the tariffs will not be necessary and that the border between both countries is safe.

The two ministers have met with Trump’s nominee as Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick, and the also nominated Secretary of the Interior, Doug Burgum, as reported by Bloomberg.

It is the second high-level Canadian mission to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in the last month, after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with the incoming president in late November.

The ministers had “a positive and productive meeting” and “reiterated the shared commitment to strengthening border security, as well as combating the harm caused by fentanyl,” according to LeBlanc’s spokesman, Jean-Sébastien Comeau.

“During their conversations, Lutnick and Burgum took note of the updates provided by both ministers and agreed to convey information to President Trump,” he said.

LeBlanc this month unveiled a border security plan aimed at assuaging Trump’s concerns about migrants and fentanyl crossing the border. The Canadian proposal includes an “aerial intelligence task force” made up of helicopters, drones and mobile surveillance towers, as well as a greater focus on countering and punishing money laundering.

The American president-elect promised to charge a 25 percent tariff on all products entering the United States from Mexico and Canada. “On January 20, as one of my many first executive orders, I will sign all the necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25 percent tariff on all products and their ridiculous open borders,” he said.

The Republican made this decision because of the “illegal aliens” and “crime and drugs” that, he declared, cross the border.
