Death toll from floods in western Indonesia rises to 27

MADRID 28 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Indonesian authorities have raised this Thursday to 27 the death toll due to landslides caused by the floods recorded throughout this week in the province of North Sumatra.

The landslides have significantly affected four districts of the province, where several vehicles have been swept away by the current, according to information from the Indonesian National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).

Several of the fatalities have been found aboard a tourist bus that has been submerged, although search and rescue teams continue their operations in an attempt to find more missing people.

Likewise, it is estimated that at least 16 people have been injured due to the latest landslides, so they have been transferred to hospitals in the area, where they receive medical treatment.

These types of incidents are common in Indonesia during the rainy season, which generally takes place between the months of November and April. However, this year during the month of May 67 people died due to a new eruption of the Marapi volcano, located in the province of West Sumatra.
