MADRID 5 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –
At least thirteen people have died and nearly thirty have been injured after the bus they were traveling in plunged into a ravine about 50 meters high on Friday in the department of Nariño, located in southwestern Colombia.
“So far, the authorities report 13 dead people, 28 injured and one unharmed, who have been transferred to the hospitals of Pasto. My deepest condolences to the families affected by this tragedy and I express all solidarity, on behalf of the Government national in these difficult times,” said Colombia’s Minister of Transportation, María Constanza García Alicastro.
The bus had left the city of Pasto bound for the border with Ecuador when, shortly after beginning its journey, it suffered an accident. According to witnesses, the vehicle was descending at high speed on a road when the driver lost control of the bus.
The rescue efforts have been carried out by the Volunteer Fire Department of nearby towns, as well as Civil Protection. The injured were taken to nearby towns, according to information collected by the RCN Radio station.
The person in charge of the portfolio has “deeply” regretted the “tragic road accident” that occurred. Previously, the president of the country, Gustavo Petro, reported that the National Police was in charge “of the emergency operation.”
