Death toll rises to thirteen and injuries to 84 in the collapse of a commercial building in Tanzania

Hassan orders the inspection of all commercial premises after the incident

MADRID, 18 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The president of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, announced this Sunday that the death toll from the collapse of a residential building in the economic center of Tanzania, Dar es Salaam, has increased to thirteen dead and 84 injured.

Hassan, who is in Brazil to attend the G20 summit, has ordered the inspection of all commercial premises after the incident to “obtain an accurate image of their structural integrity”, as he stated in a video message recorded and broadcast tonight through their social networks.

The president assured the population that the search and rescue operation was proceeding without problems, and added that the priority is to rescue those still trapped under the rubble.

This incident is the latest in a series of building collapses that point to deep systemic problems, such as widespread disregard for building standards, compromised oversight and a culture of impunity among builders, reports Tanzanian newspaper ‘The Citizen’.
