In homage to one of sci-fi’s most fervent fanbases, The Big Bang Theory features several Star Wars actors in cameo roles across its remarkable 12-season run. The Big Bang Theory’s primary nucleus of male characters Leonard (Johnny Galecki), Sheldon (Jim Parsons), Rajesh (Kunal Nayyar), and Howard (Simon Helberg) are all avid science fiction, fantasy, and comic book fans and memorabilia collectors, leading to a slew of contemporarily dubbed “geek culture” references throughout the show. These extend beyond merely character preferences, with the hit CBS comedy seeing appearances from prominent Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, and Doctor Who cast members woven into its narrative.
The Big Bang Theory ended on a high in 2019 by wrapping up many of its beloved character’s story arcs in wholly satisfying ways. Penny (Kaley Cuoco) and Leonard announce they are having a baby, while Sheldon and his new wife Amy (Mayim Bialik) win a deserved Nobel Prize for their work on super-asymmetry in Physics. The Big Bang Theory finale even contains its own celebrity cameo, with Raj managing to convince none other than his long-time crush Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Sarah Michelle Gellar) to attend the Nobel ceremony with him.
Yet, even Sarah Michelle Gellar’s hilarious cameo is dwarfed by the appearances of several Star Wars actors throughout The Big Bang Theory. Some of the original Lucas trilogy greats, such as Mark Hammill, appear as themselves to surprise and delight Sheldon, Leonard, Raj, and Howard. With that in mind, here’s every Star Wars actor who appeared in The Big Bang Theory, as well as how they made their cameos memorable.
Luke Skywalker is one of the most marketable and instantly recognizable names in the Star Wars franchise to date, played by none other than the incomparable Mark Hammill. The long-serving actor starred in the first three Star Wars franchise films, A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and The Return of the Jedi, as well as reprising his iconic role in the sequels, The Rise of Skywalker and The Last Jedi. Hammill won three Saturn awards for his early Skywalker portrayals, cementing him as a pop culture icon amongst all sci-fi fans. In The Big Bang Theory season 11 finale, Howard initially runs into Hamill after finding his hilariously named lost dog, Bark Hamill. Emboldened by his good deed, Howard asks Hammill to officiate Sheldon and Amy’s imminent wedding, with Sheldon subsequently gushing over Hammill’s appearance at the ceremony and stealing photos with the Star Wars icon.
James Earl Jones
Season 7 of The Big Bang Theory features an episode-long appearance from James Earl Jones, who became synonymous with the Star Wars franchise for his voice work as the Sith Lord Darth Vader. James Earl Jones has voiced the iconic role in eight franchise projects to date, with the legendary actor reprising his role for the latest franchise installment, The Rise of Skywalker, in 2019. In The Big Bang Theory season 7, episode 14, “The Convention Conundrum,” Sheldon creates his own version of Comic Con after failing to obtain tickets for the annual event. Although rejected by almost every celebrity he pesters to attend, the amicable Jones takes Sheldon out to a karaoke bar where the two become friends before eventually finagling Sheldon and the rest of the group the Comic Con tickets they had given up on finding.
The late, great Carrie Fisher remains of the standout faces of the Star Wars franchise following her compelling performances as Leia Organa. Fisher starred in the original three Star Wars movies and reprised her role for The Force Awakens in 2015 before her death, after which she went on to make touching posthumous appearances in both The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. Carrie Fisher features in the same episode as her Star Wars co-star James Earl Jones, with Jones taking Sheldon to Fisher’s house to enact a doorbell prank before she emerges wielding a baseball bat to cap her hilarious The Big Bang Theory cameo.
