Finland prohibits seven crew members of the oil tanker that caused damage to the EstLink 2 submarine cable from leaving the country.

MADRID 31 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Finnish Police have banned the seven crew members of the oil tanker ‘Eagle S’ from leaving the country for being suspected of causing damage to the EstLink2 submarine cable, an electricity cable that connects Finland with Estonia.

This was explained in a statement by the Crime Commissioner of the Finnish Criminal Police, Elina Katajamaki, explaining that the travel ban is “a measure of coercion against freedom that is milder than arrest and detention”, and that it is imposed because The Police “are interested in guaranteeing” the proper course of the investigation and that the crew members are always reachable.

“The investigation is constantly advancing and the situation is becoming more detailed, so it is possible that the number of people who have been banned from traveling will continue to change,” Katajamaki continued explaining, detailing that collaborative underwater research has resumed. with the Finnish authorities.

The Estlink 2 cable between Estonia and Finland was interrupted on December 25 in what Finnish authorities suspect may have been an act of sabotage. After the incident, they detained the oil tanker ‘Eagle S’, flying the Cook Islands flag, and whose anchor is believed to have damaged the cable.

According to the EU, the ship could belong to what is known as Russia’s ‘shadow fleet’: oil tankers and other cargo ships used by Russia unofficially to avoid sanctions on the transport of oil, for example.
