MADRID 26 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The former Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh (2004-2014), a historic member of the National Congress, died this Thursday at the age of 92, leaving a legacy of reforms for the liberalization of the country during the economic crisis of the 1990s.
“He held various government positions, including Finance Minister, and left a strong mark on our economic policy over the years. His interventions in Parliament were also revealing,” lamented Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Modi has praised Singh on social media, a “respected economist of humble origins.” “His wisdom and humility were always visible,” he indicated, conveying his condolences to the family, friends and admirers of the former prime minister.
Singh was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), although the details of his death have not emerged. The Government of India has declared a seven-day national mourning for his death and has canceled all government activities for this Friday.
Singh was elected prime minister in 2004 thanks to Sonia Gandhi, widow of the assassinated prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, being the first Sikh to hold the position. In 2009 he was re-elected, although his leadership was hampered by corruption accusations against him. The former Prime Minister also held the Finance portfolio in the 1990s during Narasimha Rao’s tenure.
