After Daniel Craig announced that No Time to Die would be his final James Bond film, fans began to wonder who would be the next actor to take on the role of 007. Rumors swirled around in late 2020 that Idris Elba was a possible choice. As of now, Elba’s chances of being the famous spy have grown.
Elba has now spoken with filmmakers about the role multiple times, showing a good sign regarding his chances of landing the part. Supporters of the film franchise have also begun to voice their approval of the actor’s possible role takeover. As of this publication, Elba has not commented on these discussions. However, based on the actions star resume, it would be no surprise if The Suicide Squad star will take over as James Bond if asked.
Although the actor has become what fans think is the top choice, producers have also looked at other actors to take on the role. Outside of Elba, actors who are in possible consideration include Tom Hardy, Richard Madden, and Henry Cavill.
Elba Will Make Series History If Selected For The Role
Not only would the British actor be the seventh actor to play James Bond, but he would also be the first African-American actor to portray him. The entertainment industry has continued to be in controversy regarding issues of race and diversity in films.
Elba has spoken up about diversity on several occasions, and has even made speeches about this topic at many events. Deadline shared an address Elba made to the UK’s Parliament about diversity in film and television, and the actor had nothing but strong words to say to its members.
“Diversity in the modern world is more than just skin colour – it’s gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, social background, and – most important of all, as far as I’m concerned – diversity of thought,” said Elba. “Because if you have genuine diversity of thought among people making TV & film, then you won’t accidentally shut out any of the groups I just mentioned.”
Social Media Is All For Elba Becoming The New James Bond
Twitter has been debating whether the actor is suitable for the role, primarily because of the difficulty in filling in Craig’s shoes. However, more people every day have been increasingly interested in him being James Bond, with some even saying they would watch the series for the first time if he’d be starring in it.
However, the debate is also increasing due to fans also rooting for Hardy and Madden. Others have continued to mention how old the actor is, and how he seems not to have the “edge” that one finds in the James Bond character. One fan even commented on the actor’s physique, tweeting, “Let’s face it Idris Elba could never play Bond as he’s not fit enough the role, as it would take months to get him into shape, and I doubt he would want to do it.”
Film producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson have produced all of Craig’s films, and spoke about Elba on Deadline. “Well, we know Idris, we’re friends with him, and he’s a magnificent actor,” said Broccoli. “And, you know, it’s been part of the conversation, but it’s always difficult to have the conversation when you have someone in the seat.” So for now, fans must continue to stay on the edge of their seats, and remain patient for when the time comes.
