India and Pakistan exchange lists of prisoners and nuclear facilities

MADRID 2 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The authorities of India and Pakistan announced this Wednesday the exchange of lists of their prisoners in custody, as well as their respective nuclear facilities, under agreements between the two border states, which have been at odds since their independence from the British Empire in 1947.

The Indian Foreign Ministry has confirmed that the exchange of information took place on January 1, as it has every year since it was first carried out in 1992, through diplomatic channels in New Delhi and Islamabad.

In particular, both states have shared a list of nuclear facilities that cannot be attacked in the event of hostilities, under a 1988 agreement that prohibits attacks against this type of infrastructure.

In addition, according to the newspaper ‘Hindustan Times’, they have also shared the names of the prisoners in each other’s custody, as part of an agreement that dates back to 2008. India has 462 prisoners of Pakistani nationality in its custody. Meanwhile, 266 Indian citizens remain in prisons in the neighboring country.

The Indian Foreign Ministry has asked Pakistan to “expedite the release and repatriation” of 183 prisoners who have completed their sentences. In addition, it has requested “immediate” consular access to 18 other imprisoned citizens believed to be Indians who have so far not received attention from Indian consular authorities.

For its part, Islamabad has urged New Delhi to “release and repatriate all Pakistanis who have completed their respective sentences and whose national status is confirmed”, putting them at 108 people. Likewise, it has requested consular access to 38 members of Defense personnel who disappeared during the wars of 1965 and 1971.
