MADRID 28 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The leadership of the Indian Government said goodbye this Saturday to the country’s late former Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, a historic member of the National Congress, who died this past Thursday at the age of 92, with a funeral in New Delhi that culminated with the cremation of his lifeless body.
The Indian President, Droupadi Murmu, and the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, have led a delegation that has been joined by the Vice President, Jagdeep Dhankhar, the Minister of the Interior, Amit Shah, and prominent opponents such as Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.
Singh’s mortal remains remained for a few hours at the Congress headquarters at the beginning of a seven-day mourning in memory of the late president.
International representatives such as the King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, and the Foreign Minister of Mauritius, Dhananjay Ramful, also attended the ceremony.
Finally, Singh’s remains have been cremated at Nigambodh Ghat, accompanied by the singing of religious hymns. His eldest daughter, Upinder Singh, lit the funeral pyre.
Singh was elected prime minister in 2004 thanks to Sonia Gandhi, widow of the assassinated prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, being the first Sikh to hold the position.
In 2009 he was re-elected, although his leadership was hampered by corruption accusations against him. The former Prime Minister also held the Finance portfolio in the 1990s during Narasimha Rao’s tenure.
