However, one member of Xavi’s forward line continued to be out of action through injury. Memphis Depay can add a new dimension to the Blaugranas‘ attack by dropping into the spaces behind the defence.
According to reports from Javi Miguel of Diario AS, the Dutch forward is close to returning to action. With his recovery well on track, he is expected to return in time for Barcelona’s clash against Napoli in the Europa League.
Xavi is spoilt for options in the forward line. In addition to the new signings, Ferran Torres, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Adama Traore, the manager has Ez Abde, Ferran Jutgla, Luuk de Jong, Ousmane Dembele, and now Memphis at his disposal. While it is indeed a good problem to be faced with, it remains to be seen if the 27-year-old forward will see minutes.
The Dutchman faced muscular discomfort ahead of Barcelona’s clash against Athletic Bilbao last month and has been training individually since then.
Memphis arrived at Barcelona as Ronald Koeman’s signing and had a big role to play until Xavi’s arrival. In 15 league appearances, he has scored eight goals and provided two assists this season.
However, he has only managed two goals in his seven games under the new manager. With his profile not being akin to a true winger, Memphis has had no slot in the new setup.
