MADRID 8 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Iranian authorities have released the Italian journalist Cecilia Sala, detained in mid-December and under investigation for alleged violations of local laws, the Italian Government reported this Wednesday.
The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, has personally informed Sala’s family, who has already left Tehran. Meloni thanked the “intense” diplomatic work of recent weeks, which has made it possible for the journalist to “embrace her family and colleagues again.”
“Diplomacy and teamwork: Cecilia Sala is coming home!”, the Italian Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, also celebrated on social networks, from where he expressed a satisfaction also shared by leaders of the rest of the Government parties and the opposition.
Sala was arrested on December 19 in the Iranian capital, when she was “carrying out journalistic work,” as the Italian Government itself explained. Rome confirmed contacts with a view to clarifying their situation, on which Tehran took days to comment.
The Iranian Ministry of Culture ended up confirming the arrest to explain that Sala was accused of “violating the laws of the Islamic Republic of Iran”, without clarifying the exact crimes she is accused of.
