Israel Police commander arrested for ignoring attacks by Jewish settlers in West Bank

MADRID 2 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –

An Israel Police commander was arrested this Thursday after being accused of ignoring attacks carried out by Jewish settlers in the West Bank in an attempt to gain the support and recognition of the Israeli Security Minister, Itamar Ben Gvir.

The Department of Internal Investigations of the Police (DIPI) has indicated in a statement that the commander has been identified as Avishai Muallem, head of investigation and Intelligence of the West Bank District Police, who allegedly committed acts of obstruction of Justice and abuse of authority.

Muallem has been suspended from employment and salary while the investigations continue after having asked his team to “remove documents from the Police database and transfer them only to him,” according to information collected by the newspaper ‘The Times of Israel’.

He is scheduled to appear this Thursday to testify before a Jerusalem court, where his lawyers will request that he be released although under precautionary measures.

Prosecutors accuse him of having carried out false investigations into crimes committed by extremist Jews in the West Bank, alleged investigations that were carried out in an environment of impunity whose objective was, ultimately, to please Ben Gvir.
