Journalist accused of espionage sentenced to seven years in prison in China

MADRID 29 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Chinese Justice has sentenced this Friday to seven years in prison Dong Yuyu, a well-known journalist from the ‘Guangming Daily’ who was arrested in February 2022 while meeting with a Japanese diplomat and was accused of carrying out espionage activities.

His family has confirmed the verdict of a court in Beijing, the Chinese capital, which has found him guilty of the charges presented by the Prosecutor’s Office after spending more than two years in custody since his arrest, according to information from the newspaper ‘China Press’.

Dong, 62, was active in journalistic circles in the United States and Japan, often meeting with diplomats and foreign journalists despite working at the fifth largest circulation newspaper, which maintains ties to the Chinese Communist Party. .

The Japanese diplomat who had lunch with Dong in 2022 was also arrested, although the authorities ordered his release shortly after due to criticism from the Japanese government. Chinese authorities have insisted that Dong had meetings with “espionage agents.”

Organizations defending human rights and freedom of the press, such as the National Press Club of the United States, have criticized the judicial decision and have warned of its impact on the profession and its value for democracy.
