Amazon’s first trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power contains a shot of a man cloaked in fire, but who is he? First released on February 13th, 2022, via a shiny Super Bowl commercial, The Rings of Power teaser trailer sets up events across Middle Earth’s Second Age through 19 sweeping, action-filled shots. Among these is Markella Kavenagh’s Harfoot girl reaching out to a figure at the center of a fiery maelstrom, leading The Lord of the Rings audiences to speculate on who this mysterious man might be.

The Rings of Power showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay have stated (via Vanity Fair) that the Amazon series will look “to tell one story that unites all” of the Second Age’s big events. While condensing the Second Age’s expansive 2,500-year narrative will likely result in cuts to J.R.R. Tolkien’s original The Silmarillion material that The Rings of Power is based on, it will also allow the series’ primary characters to come to the fore much quicker. Some familiar faces such as Morfydd Clark’s Galadriel and Robert Aramayo’s Elrond feature prominently in the trailer, while other anticipated characters, such as Sauron and Gandalf, remain unseen for now.

The speculation on the man in the fire mid-way through The Rings of Power trailer has led to two distinct schools of thought regarding his identity to date. There is a strong argument for the man being Sauron the deceiver, with the dark lord’s association to smoke and fire a well-known facet of his character. Equally, audiences have speculated it could be Gandalf in his Maia form, with the flame falling from the sky signaling the god Eru sending him to Tolkien’s Middle Earth.

Though there is little context to date regarding this blink-and-you’ll-miss-it clip from The Rings of Power teaser, a likely candidate for the man’s identity is Sauron. This line of thinking stems from his ties to the fiery settings of Mordor, Mount Doom, and Barad-dûr in the original The Lord of the Rings trilogy, as well as his forging of the Rings of Power for Middle Earth’s leaders. Sauron’s deceptive abilities are a well-known aspect of his character from Tolkien’s works, meaning a Harfoot attempting to aid him would also not be out of the question. Although the man in the circle of fire looks decidedly older than Tolkien’s descriptions of Sauron’s beautiful form in the Second Age, this could simply be artistic license on behalf of McKay and Payne in portraying Sauron’s character.

Conversely, the argument for the man in the fire being Gandalf is equally compelling beyond his elder appearance. Many fans have taken to social media to claim that the mysterious man could well be a younger version of the Grey Wizard, particularly given that he does not appear malicious in a way Sauron might when besieged by flame. Furthermore, Gandalf was sent to Middle Earth from the sky by Eru, an omnipotent god, meaning the fiery figure could tie into the comet-like object that streaks across the sky earlier in The Rings of Power trailer. While audiences may have to wait for more information on the man in the fire, the Amazon trailer sets up an intriguing plot point for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power that will be followed with much interest in the months ahead of the show’s release.
