Meloni celebrates Fitto’s confirmation as “a victory for all Italians, not the Government”

MADRID 21 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, has stated that the European Parliament’s endorsement of Raffaele Fitto as future vice president of the European Commission represents “a victory for all Italians, not for the Government or a political force” in particular.

Meloni, who in previous days had criticized the Italian social democrats for opposing Fitto’s appointment in Brussels, has pointed out from Buenos Aires that Italy now regains “centrality” within the EU, “at the height” of the role it should play. the country, AdnKronos reports.

Fitto will hold the vice-presidency of Cohesion and Reforms within the new European Commission, which will initially begin on December 1. His appointment has been the subject of debate because the extreme right has never before had a position of this importance in the Community Executive.

The appointment has finally gone ahead after an agreement between popular, social democrats and liberals that has also implied unblocking the rest of the vice-presidencies, among them the one held by the Spanish Teresa Ribera. The next appointment will come on November 27, when the European Parliament will vote on the College of Commissioners as a whole.
