Meloni rules out an annexation of Greenland “by force” and justifies Trump’s words

The Italian Prime Minister describes Musk’s criticism of European governments as “opinions” and denies that it is “interference”

MADRID, 9 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, has assumed that the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, will not try to take the island of Greenland, under Danish sovereignty, “by force”, and has attributed his controversial public threats to the fact that Washington will not sit idly by if other international actors try to gain a presence in the area.

“We have already seen what Trump is like as president,” said Meloni, during a press conference in which he assured that the fact that the magnate did not rule out military actions in Greenland or the Panama Canal is more “a message” to countries like China than purely “hostile” statements, despite the fact that other NATO partners such as France and Germany have openly criticized the words of the future tenant of the White House.

Meloni, however, has taken the opportunity to anticipate a “very solid” relationship with Trump, whom he recently visited at his Mar-a-Lago mansion. Thus, although he has described the ties with Joe Biden’s Administration as “excellent”, he believes that the coincidence of two leaders with a markedly conservative character can contribute to bringing positions closer together.

The Italian Prime Minister is in fact invited to Trump’s inauguration on January 20, as confirmed by Meloni herself, who has shown her willingness to participate in this event if the agenda allows it, reports the AdnKronos news agency. .

In relation to the positions that the future North American president may adopt in terms of foreign policy, Meloni has predicted that Trump will not withdraw US support for Ukraine, something that would be, in his opinion, a “mistake.” “If today we talk about peace, it is because Russia has stagnated a bit in Ukraine. And it has been thanks, obviously, to the courage of the Ukrainian people, but also to Western support. Donald Trump knows it,” he added.

MUSK DEFENSE

Meloni has also justified that tycoon Elon Musk, considered Trump’s right-hand man, has committed any “interference” by criticizing European governments or openly expressing his sympathies for far-right parties such as the Alternative for Germany (AfD). According to the prime minister, these are simple “opinions.”

“Interference is what (businessman George) Soros does by financing parties,” stressed Meloni, who does not believe that the fact that “a well-known and rich person” like Musk can represent “a danger to democracy,” despite that other leaders such as the French Emmanuel Macron, the German Olaf Scholz or the British Keir Starmer have criticized the cascade of messages from the owner of the social network X.
