MADRID 25 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, confirmed this Monday that nearly 18,500 people have registered in advance to participate in the elections to the Judiciary, the last legacy of Andrés Manuel López Obrador as leader of the country after leaving office on last October when his term expired.
During the last moments of his presidency, López Obrador promoted a controversial judicial reform – approved by Parliament – that includes the election of judges through popular suffrage. Sheinbaum defended the reform and has now assured that the registration figures show the “success” of the measure.
“It was a complete success, something unprecedented, historic, the registration of people to be part of the Judiciary,” the Mexican president celebrated this Monday during her usual morning press conference, where the former president of the Supreme Court Arturo Zaldívar, a member, also participated. of the commission evaluating the reform.
Zaldívar has celebrated that for most positions, “especially the most important ones”, a number of people have applied that exceed the vacancies. Now the authorities must analyze the profiles of those registered to check if they meet the necessary requirements, reports the newspaper ‘El Universal’.
Thus, Zaldívar has highlighted the “historical” nature of the process and the stage that has just been completed. “The response from Mexico’s lawyers has been impressive, the results are spectacular and exceeded any expectations, which shows that people’s interest in this process is latent,” he said.
In mid-September, López Obrador signed the judicial reform decree promoted by his government, despite the fact that there was a court order against the ratification of the measure. The ruling party defended the initiative as a definitive step to guarantee judicial independence in the country.
The text includes, in addition to the direct election of judges, that the Supreme Court be made up of nine members instead of eleven, and the disappearance of the Judicial Council. During his mandate, López Obrador came to accuse the judiciary of serving the opposition and acting for political interests.
