MADRID 7 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Former Colombian president Andrés Pastrana has announced that several former presidents of the region will accompany the Venezuelan opponent Edmundo González in his attempt to return to Venezuela, where he aspires to challenge the Chavista theses and assume the Presidency on January 10.
González, the main opposition candidate in the July 28 elections, went into exile in Spain after the elections and is now immersed in a tour of Latin America and the United States that he hopes will be the precursor to a return to Caracas that has yet to be finalized.
According to Pastrana, nine presidents of the Democratic Initiative of Spain and the Americas (IDEA) will also travel along with the Venezuelan opposition, including the Mexican Felipe Calderón, the Bolivian Jorge ‘Tuto’ Quiroga, the Costa Rican Laura Chinchilla and the Panamanians Ernesto Pérez Valladares and Mireya Moscoso.
This group will hold a first meeting on Wednesday in Panama, Pastrana explained in an interview with the Blu Radio station in which he thanked the “gentle invitation” offered by the current Panamanian president, José Raúl Mulino. Later, they will travel to the Dominican Republic, before the supposed trip to Venezuela.
Pastrana has highlighted the importance of IDEA, which brings together more than thirty presidents who “fight for the defense of freedom, of democracy, not only in Venezuela but throughout the region.” Among the members of this initiative are the Spaniards Felipe González, José María Aznar and Mariano Rajoy.
