Peru declares an environmental emergency in the province of Talara due to an oil spill into the sea

MADRID 26 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Government of Peru has declared a state of environmental emergency in the tourist province of Talara (northwest) due to the oil spill into the sea from the state company Petroperú on December 20.

The Ministry of the Environment has explained that the measure will be in force for 90 days, in order to be able to “carry out recovery work” and mitigate the consequences of the spill on the fauna and flora of the area.

According to Petroperú, the cleaning tasks have almost concluded on the half dozen beaches in the Lobitos district that were affected by the spill last Friday in Las Capullanas when the crude oil was being loaded onto the ‘Polyagios’ ship, ten kilometers away. from the Talara refinery.

In a latest statement from Petroperú, the company has reported that it maintains the constant deployment of personnel in the affected areas, complementing these tasks with the presence of ships and drones to detect any “eventuality.”

In recent days, residents have demonstrated to reject the version that the affected area had been cleaned, as defended by the oil company.
