MADRID 9 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk, has assured that no Israeli politician who wants to participate in the events for the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, will be detained despite the arrest warrant. international issued against him by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

“Whether it is the prime minister, the president or the minister of Education of the State of Israel, whoever comes to Oswiecim, to the ceremony in Auschwitz, will have guaranteed security and will not be detained,” Tusk stressed this Thursday.

The Polish Prime Minister has said that “every representative of the State of Israel” should have the right to visit the Auschwitz concentration camp, “especially” this month for its liberation events, which are held at the end of January.

“I cannot imagine that the political leaders of the State of Israel cannot safely participate in the celebration of the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. It is completely unacceptable,” the prime minister stressed.

Likewise, he has questioned the Polish president, Andrzej Duda, for putting this issue in public debate. “There are matters that must be handled with discretion, especially when they are so important,” he stated, as reported by the PAP news agency.

This comes after Duda, a supporter of the opposition Law and Justice (PiS), asked Tusk in a letter to allow Netanyahu’s visit. This Thursday, the Government adopted a resolution in which it undertakes to guarantee “the free and safe participation of the highest representatives of Israel”, alluding to the fact that this is an exception.

Last November, the ICC issued arrest warrants against Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity perpetrated within the framework of the military offensive launched against the Gaza Strip after the previous Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, in which almost 1,200 people were killed and another 240 were kidnapped.

It seems difficult for the arrest warrants to be executed given that the ICC does not have its own elements and depends on the police collaboration of the signatory States of the Rome Statute, within which Israel does not appear, nor does its main international supporter. USA. Poland, however, is a signatory to the agreement.
