Protesters gather in front of the Georgian Parliament to protest the abandonment of the European path

MADRID 28 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered this Thursday night in front of the Georgian Parliament building and the headquarters of the ruling Georgian Dream to protest the recent statements by Prime Minister Irakli Kobajidze about the decision to abandon membership aspirations until 2028. the European Union.

Dressed in flags of Georgia and the European Union, the protesters denounce that this decision by Kobajidze is contrary to the Constitution, which in one of its articles recognizes the desire for European integration. Furthermore, they warn that this decision could jeopardize accession to the EU in the future as well.

The rally, which has been organized through social networks, has the participation of the Georgian president, Salomé Zurabishvili, who has become a leading figure in the opposition to the Kobajidze Government and has encouraged the protesters to continue with the protest.

Shortly after Kobajidze’s statement, which triggered this demonstration, the Georgian president held an urgent meeting with several representatives of diplomatic corps accredited in the capital, Tbilisi, and also with members of the opposition to the Georgian Dream, as stated. as reported by the local press.

In a subsequent press statement, Zurabishvili denounced that Kobajidze has “declared war on his people” with a “constitutional coup” that has quickly received the support of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Georgian opposition accuses the Government of adopting measures similar to the Kremlin.

In fact, Georgia held parliamentary elections at the end of October in which Kobajidze’s Georgian Dream prevailed. However, the opposition and part of the international community have rejected the results due to alleged influence from Moscow and have even demanded a repeat of the elections.

This is the case of President Zurabishvili, who in her statement to the media after meeting with diplomatic personnel in Tbilisi has acknowledged that, during the meeting, she has urged them to “make all the decisions that should have already been made”, such as working for the holding of new elections.

“Today I am the only legitimate institution of this country, the only legitimate representative of this country, the only one who has the right to speak to the world on behalf of our society. I will do this and I will be here until the end, I will be there for you and the community “This is a resistance movement,” Zurabishvili said.
