Things have not gone well for Sergio Reguilón in recent times, after he emerged as a footballer at Real Madrid under Santiago Solari and established himself as a professional in the elite with Sevilla FC, winning a Europa League. He even became a full international with Spain. A promising future in European football that, however, has not completely arrived.
And as an example, this season, on his return to London with Tottenham. At 27 years old, Reguilón has been ostracized by Ange Postecoglou. In fact, he has not yet played a single minute defending the Tottenham jersey.
Sergio Reguilón’s career has been diluted in recent years to worrying situations, like the current one. Since signing for Tottenham he hasn’t done particularly well. In the summer of 2022, for example, he went on loan to Atlético de Madrid, playing only 12 games. Just the same as last year, when he emulated the play towards Manchester United. In January, yes, he broke off the loan and returned to Tottenham to be loaned again to Brentford.
At the Community Stadium, however, the lack of continuity accumulated to date did not take its toll, earning him a place in Thomas Frank’s eleven thanks, in part, to the serious injury suffered by Rico Henry. 16 games in which he started 14 of them. A successful half-season from which Reguilón left with four assists and being the second player with the most crosses for Brentford, with a total of 72, as well as the seventh with the most balls into the area (17). “He is an offensive full-back with a great left foot to put in crosses,” the Danish coach said of him.
That, however, was not enough to convince Postecoglou, who left him out of Tottenham’s preseason tour last summer, just the same thing that happened to Lo Celso and Bryan Gil, who ended up leaving and seeking prominence in Betis and Girona, respectively. Reguilón, however, chose to stay and fight to get a position, something that he has not achieved and about which, given what he has seen, he has resigned himself: “I know that I can play for Tottenham. But, in many aspects of football “The player is not in control. I don’t want to sit in the stadium watching it. I’m 27 years old and have too much football to live through.”
The truth is that their current situation is too tense. Not only is he the only player in the Tottenham squad who has not enjoyed a single minute of play, but he has also not been called up for any match, other than one in the Carabao Cup against Coventry. Their last official match played was the one between Brentford and Newcastle on May 19.
To make matters worse, the situation becomes even more strange if you take into account that Postecoglou does not have plenty of left backs, with Destiny Udogie being the only natural left back he has, along with a versatile Ben Davies of whom he is also pulling
Officially, Reguilón is not separated from the group, although practice shows that yes, he does not count for his Tottenham coach, who on the first day of the Europa League explained the Spaniard’s presence in training (despite his non-call) in the following way: “He is a Tottenham player and we need 20 outfield players to train. It made no sense to bring boys from the quarry because they played last night. That’s why we brought Sergio.”
CWith a contract until June 30, 2025, his future is far from Tottenham this January. In England there is speculation about a possible termination with which the English team would save their salary, although everything will depend on Reguilón’s plans to save his season. Going out on loan again, ending the contract, is not the most logical move. As a free agent, he could sign more easily for any team, taking the same path as Lo Celso and Bryan Gil in the summer.
