Russia frames Trump’s demands on Greenland in the “bilateral relations” of the US and Denmark

The Kremlin emphasizes that the Arctic is “an area of national interest” for Moscow and calls for maintaining “peace and stability”

MADRID, 9 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –

This Thursday, the Kremlin framed the statements by the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, about Washington’s willingness to take control of Greenland as “a matter of bilateral relations” between the North American country and Denmark, although it has highlighted that the Arctic is “an area of national interest” for Moscow.

“These statements are probably more a matter of bilateral relations between the United States and Denmark,” said the spokesman for the Russian Presidency, Dimitri Peskov, who stressed that Moscow “closely follows the dramatic events surrounding the situation.” “Thank God, even at the level of statements.”

“The Arctic is an area of our national interests, of our strategic interests. We are present in the Arctic area and we will continue to be present there,” he detailed, while emphasizing Russia’s will to “maintain an atmosphere of peace and stability.” ” in this area.

Thus, Peskov has detailed that the Russian authorities “are prepared to interact with all countries in the world in the name of peace and stability in all places and in the Arctic area in particular”, also in relation to Trump’s words about a possible annexation of Canada, as reported by the Russian news agency Interfax.

Trump, who already proposed buying Greenland during his first term, stirred up the debate again on Tuesday, in a press conference in which he highlighted territorial aspirations even over Canada, a country that he has already described as “the 51st state” of USA.

On the other hand, he pointed out that the Kremlin is also analyzing the exchange of statements between the United States and Panama regarding the control of the Panama Canal, a fact that it has also framed in “bilateral relations” between both countries, after Trump said no. He ruled out resorting to the Army to take over the canal or Greenland.

The Republican magnate recently stated that he does not rule out resorting to military or economic pressure measures to control the Panama Canal and maintained that the current configuration of this strategic route “is a disgrace,” since, in his opinion, it is China that controls the infrastructure.

In this way, he regretted that former President Jimmy Carter gave up control of the channel for one dollar in exchange for “supposedly” treating the United States well. “”It was a big mistake,” said Trump, who will soon take office to a second term at the head of the country after his victory in the elections held in November 2024.
