The German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, defended this Tuesday before his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, that “no one should be afraid of their neighbor”, in an apparent allusion to the conflict in Ukraine, amid information that points to the supply of drones to Russia that would be employed in the European country.

Scholz spoke these words before their bilateral meeting in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, where both leaders are attending the G20 summit of the main economic powers.

The head of the German Executive made this statement, despite not mentioning the Russian invasion of Ukraine, after this Monday the German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, stated that they could impose sanctions on China if the information about the manufacturing of military drones for Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Scholz himself assured that day that he would discuss this issue with the Chinese president: “It is always a topic of my conversations to warn everyone against supplying lethal weapons to Russia,” he said in statements reported by the German news agency DPA. .

The German has also not alluded, at least publicly, to the increase in tensions between the Asian giant and the island of Taiwan, which China considers to be another province under its sovereignty.

During the meeting, the chancellor asked that both States join forces in order to promote international peace and security. The Chinese president, for his part, has assured that his government is willing to work to “consolidate the comprehensive strategic partnership” between both countries.

Likewise, Xi has warned that global development is at a “critical crossroads”, which is leading to different conflicts. “Ensuring security and peace is a test that all countries must face,” he declared.
