The Venezuelan opposition candidate Edmundo González has visited the Dominican Republic, the theoretical last stop of his regional tour before moving again to Venezuelan territory, where on Friday he could take possession of the Presidency in an act of which no details are known and which will not be recognized. by the ruling party, which claims the victory of Nicolás Maduro in the July elections.

During his visit to the Caribbean nation, González participated in an event alongside President Luis Abinader and former presidents of the IDEA Group – some of whom could accompany him on his return to Venezuela – in which he expressed his gratitude to Santo Domingo for your support. “Thank you very much on behalf of the Venezuelans, we will all see you very soon in Caracas,” he said.

In his speech to the authorities, González assured that “the fight is taking place in the streets” of Venezuela, where this Thursday the opposition has called for a day of demonstrations in support of dissidence and against the Maduro regime. “With great courage, in the face of threats, arrests, forced disappearances, Venezuelans are demonstrating a spirit of freedom,” he said.

“We have had to learn hard lessons as a people, but we have been able to put the regime on the ropes,” celebrated the veteran opponent, who has recounted the process that the parties opposed to Maduro went through to hold primary elections and meet in around a unity candidacy with María Corina Machado at the helm, later disqualified and replaced by González.

Likewise, he thanked the “more than a million people” who collaborated to collect nearly 85 percent of the electoral records, which have been analyzed by the opposition and with which he justifies his victory. González has reiterated the opposition’s willingness to agree on a peaceful transition, but that Chavismo “refuses to accept defeat.”

“Instead, it has chosen to unleash the worst escalation of repressive violence in the history of our country, classified by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights as state terrorism. And in the face of this, the courageous response of all of us who would like to be supporters of this transformation,” he added.

Finally, González has asserted that “a regime like this” represents a “threat to the entire hemisphere,” and that is why the opposition is determined to continue “with the fight until the end,” always counting on the collaboration of “the Democrats of the region”, in these “critical days” in which the defense of “freedom and democracy has its epicenter in Venezuela”.
