GREIFSWALD (ALEMANIA), 9 (DPA/EP)
The candidate of the Liberal Party of Germany (FDP), Christian Lindner, was the victim of an accident this Thursday when a young woman threw a foamy substance, presumably shaving foam, in his face during a campaign event in the city of Greifswald, located in the northwest of the country.
A spokesperson for the FDP, as well as an eyewitness, have told the DPA agency that the young woman, a supporter of the Left party, was sitting behind the candidate when he stood up and after saying the words “dear Mr. Lindner”, she launched into a kind of cake made with shaving foam.
Next, Lindner quickly removed the remains of foam from her face and wiped her hand in the hair of the aggressor, who was subdued by several members of the candidate’s security. The leader of the liberals continued with his speech while wiping the remains with a napkin.
“Unfortunately it wasn’t cream, just soap. At least I could have done it better and then I could have eaten something,” said ironically the former Finance Minister in the coalition government led by the social democrat Olaf Scholz, whose departure precipitated the calling for elections.
The German population is called to the polls on February 23 early after the fall of the Scholz Government once the liberals withdrew their support. Polls point to a victory for the conservative CDU/CSU, although it will have to seek support to govern.
