Sheinbaum suggests calling the US “Mexican America” after Trump’s proposal on the Gulf of Mexico

MADRID 8 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum, has rejected the proposal of the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, to rename the Gulf of Mexico to call it “Gulf of America” and has ironically suggested that the United States should then be called “Mexican America”, appealing to a text from the early 19th century.

Trump again attacked the neighboring country during a press conference on Tuesday in which he again threatened Mexico with the imposition of tariffs if it did not stop immigration and argued that the country was actually run by drug trafficking cartels.

Sheinbaum responded in his usual morning appearance to suggest that “President Trump was misinformed.” Thus, he has pointed out that the Republican magnate thinks that Felipe Calderón is still president “but no, in Mexico the people govern.”

He has also come out against Trump’s idea about the Gulf of Mexico, to point out that it is the “internationally recognized” name and dates back to the early 16th century, before the existence of the United States as a country. The president showed a map and stated that the Apatzingán Constitution referred to Mexican America, a name that the United States could now have: “It sounds nice, doesn’t it?”
