The US president, Joe Biden, has expressed his regret for the death this Sunday of former president Jimmy Carter, of whom he has highlighted his work as an “extraordinary leader, statesman, humanitarian activist and friend.”
“America and the world have lost an extraordinary leader, a statesman and a humanitarian activist. For more than six decades we have had the honor of calling Jimmy Carter a friend. But the extraordinary thing about Jimmy Carter is that millions of people in the United States United States and around the world and those who have not met him also believe that he is a friend,” the White House said in a statement signed by Joe and Jill Biden.
They also highlight his “compassion and moral clarity” that “made him work to eradicate the disease, forge peace, promote civil rights and human rights, promote free and fair elections, shelter the homeless and always defend the minorities”.
The current tenant of the White House has also valued his “courage, hope and optimism” and his “humble leadership” which he considers “the definition of patriotism.”
That is why he urges “all young people in this country” to study the life of Jimmy Carter. “It showed that we are a great nation because we are good people, decent and honest, brave and compassionate, humble and strong,” he said.
Biden has ordered a state funeral in Washington DC “for James Earl Carter Jr., 39th president of the United States, 76th governor of Georgia, lieutenant in the United States Navy, graduate of the United States Naval Academy and son favorite of Plains, Georgia, who gave his entire life in the service of God and country.
Bill and Hillary Clinton have also spoken out, highlighting their “long and good life (…) guided by their faith, in which President Carter lived to serve others until the end.”
For Michelle and Barack Obama Carter “taught us all what it means to live a life of excellence, dignity, justice and service.” “Michelle and I dedicate our thoughts and prayers to the Carter family and to all who loved and learned from this extraordinary man,” they highlighted.
