The Big Bang Theory: Every Professor Proton Episode, Ranked

1 month ago 56

With all 12 seasons of The Big Bang Theory now available to stream on HBO Max, it can be hard to narrow down which of the hundreds of episodes is ready for a re-watch. Picking an iconic character or cameo to follow is a great way to make the decision, and Professor Proton should be at the top of the list.

Bob Newhart features in 6 rib-tickling episodes of The Big Bang Theory as Professor Proton, the host of a children’s science show that Sheldon and Leonard grew up on. The two of them, especially Sheldon, idolize him, making for some hilarious and heartfelt interactions. From performing science experiments for the guys to appearing as a wise, imaginary ghost, Professor Proton stars in some great episodes.

6The Opening Night Excitation

On Amy’s birthday in the eleventh episode of season 9, Sheldon decides to give her the gift of intimacy for the first time. In a dream, he goes to an imaginary Jedi Professor Proton for advice on how to proceed.

“The Opening Night Excitation” is one of the best TBBT episodes to watch if you miss Sheldon and Amy, and also a funny episode to watch for a quick appearance from the sage Professor Proton. At this point in the series, he only speaks through his ghostly form, but being able to see Bob Newhart as the scientist for even a short amount of time is a treat.

5The Planetarium Collision

In the twelfth episode of season 5, Sheldon and Amy get into a spat over how much time Amy should dedicate to her work versus their joint project. Sheldon consults the sagely Jedi ghost Professor Proton in his dream for advice about it.

Learning to tell Sheldon what she wants is one of the ways that Amy has matured throughout The Big Bang Theory. This episode shows how Sheldon is able to respond to her needs, even if it is through the help of Professor Proton. The children’s show host also gives some hilariously useful relationship advice for all viewers to take note of: Don’t go to bed angry, and “if you don’t recognize the shoes under your bed, they are not your shoes.”

4The Proton Displacement

In the seventh episode of season 7, Professor Proton asks Leonard for assistance on a physics project. Naturally, Sheldon is very jealous about this. To deal with it, he enlists the help of Bill Nye the Science Guy.

Seeing Professor Proton work on an experiment with Leonard, one of the smartest characters on The Big Bang Theory, is entirely different from seeing him doing experiments for children, which is what viewers are used to. Plus, he serves as a catalyst for Sheldon to bring in a Bill Nye cameo, making this episode extra cool with a double dose of nostalgia.

3The Proton Regeneration

The sixth episode of season 11 brings news that television producers are remaking the “Professor Proton” science show that Sheldon and Leonard used to love as kids. Of course, Sheldon auditions and expects to fulfill the role, but he is less than pleased when the part goes to Wil Wheaton.

Sheldon visits Jedi ghost Professor Proton in his dream several times so that he may rant to him about Wheaton’s casting. Professor Proton seems to be humorously fed up with Sheldon’s repeated after-life visits. He finishes the hilarious episode off with the question of how to get on the enemy list that Sheldon has put Wheaton on for accepting the role of Professor Proton.

2The Proton Resurgence

The twenty-second episode of season 6 reveals that Sheldon and Leonard’s childhood hero, Professor Proton, is available to hire for parties. They write him a check and invite him over to perform, allowing him to become acquainted with the quirky crew before his pacemaker malfunctions.

Professor Proton’s in-person debut episode brings out a child-like science obsession in Sheldon and Leonard and really highlights Penny’s scientific incompetence in the best way possible. When Professor Proton ends up in the hospital and asks Sheldon to fill in for a gig, Sheldon makes it hilariously clear that he has now adopted the older man as a father figure.

1The Proton Transmogrification

Leonard and Sheldon get the bad news that Professor Proton has died in the twenty-second episode of season 7. Sheldon silently struggles with this loss as Leonard and Penny go to the funeral. He copes by conjuring up a ghost-like Professor Proton to advise him while wearing Jedi Robes.

Viewers start the episode by thinking that they will never see Professor Proton again, only for him to soon appear as a glowing ghost in classic Star Wars attire, which is a pleasant surprise. However, the episode is also very heartwarming. Sheldon struggles to cope with the death of a father figure and gives Leonard an affectionate hug to remind him that he cares for him per Professor Proton’s advice, proving that Leonard and Sheldon have the best friendship in The Big Bang Theory.
