Justice Minister Yariv Levin will serve as acting head of government during his incapacity
MADRID, 29 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The court trying Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for corruption has granted the president a one-week leave of absence until he recovers from surgery this Sunday to remove his prostate.
Netanyahu is charged with several counts of fraud and breach of trust for his dealings with newspaper tycoons and publishers, as well as one count of bribery for allegedly entering into an illegal deal with Shaul Elovitch, the owner of the Walla news website and the giant of Bezeq telecommunications.
Netanyahu’s lawyer, Amit Hadad, confirmed that the court quickly granted the request and scheduled in principle the resumption of interrogations “next week, on Monday, January 6”, before wishing the prime minister a full recovery.
Netanyahu underwent an examination at the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem in which doctors discovered a urinary tract infection resulting from a benign enlargement of the prostate, reports the newspaper ‘The Times of Israel’. Since then, the prime minister has undergone a course of antibiotics and the infection is no longer a problem, although he will need to undergo an operation that requires complete anesthesia and a minimum of seven days of convalescence in hospital.
Israeli Justice Minister Yariv Levin will serve as acting prime minister during the time Netanyahu remains incapacitated and Defense Minister Israel Katz will be given the power to convene the national security leadership in the event that the situation so required.
