The EU charges against the “politically motivated and unacceptable” new sentence of Russian dissident Alexei Gorinov

BRUSELAS 30 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

This Saturday, the European Union expressed its rejection of the new three-year prison sentence for Russian dissident Alexei Gorinov for “justifying terrorism”, a sentence that Brussels considers “politically motivated and unacceptable.”

“The latest judicial decision is politically motivated and unacceptable. The Russian authorities must put an end to the repression and immediately and unconditionally release Alexei Gorinov and the rest of the political prisoners in Russia,” community diplomacy highlighted in a statement.

The Russian Justice sentenced Gorinov, councilor of the Moscow district of Krasnoselski, to another three years in prison on Friday for “justifying terrorism.” This sentence is in addition to the seven years in prison he is already serving for disseminating information about the Army.

The accused, 63 years old, whose health condition is precarious, according to close sources, is one of the most influential Russian dissidents currently imprisoned in the country. Gorinov, who was already serving the previous sentence, imposed in 2022, has on several occasions called the war in Ukraine a “bloodshed” and has warned that children “died every day” as a result of Russian actions.

Now, after this new trial, he has been convicted of “justifying acts of terrorism” in conversations with other prisoners within the prison where he is located, according to information from the Russian news portal Meduza.

In his last argument before the court, he has assured that the country has suffered a “degradation” of its political system and has reaffirmed that he has been opposing war and violence for many years. “The third year of a war is ending that is leaving the greatest number of victims and destruction on European soil since the Second World War, resulting in the suffering of millions of people. We cannot remain silent in the face of this,” he said.
