BRUSELAS 25 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The European Union has congratulated the Frente Amplio candidate, Yamandú Orsi, for his victory in the presidential elections in Uruguay, a country that shares values with the European bloc such as “respect for democracy, human rights and the law.”
“The Uruguayan people have voted in a peaceful and orderly manner, demonstrating once again the strength of the country’s institutions and the commitment of its people to democracy and the rule of law,” said the EU Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Peter Stano.
In this sense, Stano has described Uruguay as a “key partner.” “Our relationship is reinforced by the commercial exchange and investments of numerous European companies in key sectors thanks to the country’s stable political and economic context,” he added in a statement.
For this reason, he said that the EU is “committed to deepening” the relationship with Uruguay in areas such as green, digital and fair transitions. “We also look forward to constructive engagement with the new government in support of multilateralism and a rules-based international order,” he concluded.
According to the Electoral Court of Uruguay, Orsi has prevailed over the candidate of the ruling National Party, Álvaro Delgado, with nearly 50 percent of the support. Just over 95,500 votes separate the two candidates.
