The European Union has indicated this Friday that it “deplores” the “intimidation” of the Venezuelan authorities against the opposition leader María Corina Machado, who was temporarily detained after participating in a protest against the Government on the eve of Nicolás Maduro’s inauguration. , who will take office for a third term despite not having shown the complete scrutiny that confirms the electoral results of last July 28.
“We deplore the acts of intimidation against María Corina Machado. The EU calls on the Venezuelan authorities to end all unjust and arbitrary detentions, including those of dual nationals and foreigners, and unconditionally release all prisoners politicians,” an EU spokesperson told Europa Press about the episode that occurred this Thursday in Caracas.
In this sense, the European bloc denounces that since the July elections the Maduro regime has “intensified the repression and harassment against the opposition and civil society and their families.” In this sense, it has imprisoned dissident voices and “forced its own citizens to live in fear or go into exile,” he added.
“Opposition leaders and their families continue to face repression and constant intimidation,” criticized the EU spokesperson.
Machado confirmed that on Thursday, after attending a march against the Government, she had been temporarily detained by the “repressive forces of the regime”, in an incident where one person was injured by a gunshot. The Chavista Executive accused the opposition, however, of inventing this assault.
In the last two days, 16 people related to the opposition have been arrested in Venezuela, including the son-in-law of former presidential candidate Edmundo González, amid the increase in repression in Caracas before Maduro’s inauguration and after Edmundo Gonzalez has promised to return. to the country from which he fled in September to also try to take possession.
