The Government of Chile paralyzes the purchase of Allende’s home, of which the Minister of Defense is co-owner

Boric claims an “incompatibility” with the co-ownership structure of the property

MADRID, 4 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, has provisionally abandoned the idea of the Government taking over the house in which former president Salvador Allende lived, an operation that would have cost the State coffers more than 890,000 euros and that It was surrounded by controversy because it benefits the Minister of Defense, Maya Fernández, granddaughter of the former president.

The Chilean Government has finally backed down in the last few hours and confirmed that the purchase will not take place at the moment “due to the current co-ownership structure of the community of heirs of former President Allende”, according to a statement reported by the newspaper ‘La Tercera’. ‘.

President Boric later confirmed the suspension of the procedures due to a real estate “incompatibility” that has led to the purchase being stopped “until this problem is eventually solved.”

“If that is not solved, the purchase cannot be made, because in Chile the institutions work,” the president argued in comments collected by the same medium.

The spokesperson for the Chilean Executive, Aisén Etcheverri, had explained on Friday to the T13 news network that the Government’s objective was to transform this home, along with those of former President Patricio Aylwin, into house museums to promote that citizens “know this part of Chilean history.

Regarding Allende’s home, located in Guardia Vieja, a commune of Providencia, the State intended to present an offer for a figure greater than 930 million Chilean pesos (more than 890,000 euros. Regarding the houses of Aylwin, the Government could pay up to 1,300 million pesos (more than 1.2 million euros).

Controversy has plagued this operation not only due to the high disbursement that the State will have to make, but also due to the fact that Allende’s home purchase will benefit the Minister of Defense, granddaughter of the former president and co-owner with her brother Alejandro de la housing in question.

Etcheverri has stressed that “in both families there are people who have held public positions or who are currently in public positions”, which is all the more reason why the Chilean authorities “are doing all the legal checks at each stage so that this be with transparency”.

“No one here is looking to do any type of business or enrich themselves at the expense of the State,” the Chilean president reiterated.

Allende presided over Chile between 1970 and September 1973, when he committed suicide in the La Moneda Palace while the military man Augusto Pinochet carried out a coup against him. For his part, Aylwin governed the country between 1990 and 1994, just after Pinochet’s departure from power.
