The president of Iran, Masud Pezeshkian, will travel to Russia on January 17 to sign a strategic partnership agreement with Moscow within the framework of the rapprochement between both nations following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The Iranian ambassador in Moscow, Kazem Jalali, has reported that both leaders will meet in Moscow for the signing of the so-called ‘Comprehensive Cooperation Agreement’ after the drafting of the text was completed last October, according to the agency. state news station TASS.
The last time they both saw each other was on the occasion of the BRICS summit in the Russian city of Kazan. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Vitali Savelie invited Pezeshkian to officially attend Russia at the end of December.
This comes after Russia and North Korea signed a controversial strategic partnership agreement that includes a mutual defense clause and has led Pyongyang to send North Korean troops to Russian territory for deployment in Ukraine.
The United States and other Western countries have accused Tehran of supplying Moscow with dozens of missiles to be used in the conflict that broke out in February 2022, following the invasion ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin of the neighboring country.
