MADRID 12 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The mayor of Arenillas, a city located in the southeast of Ecuador, died this Saturday after being shot five times while driving his car accompanied by his son, who was wounded by a gunshot.

“We regret to announce the death of our beloved mayor of Arenillas,” the Association of Ecuadorian Municipalities (AME) reported on its X social network account.

The events occurred after 4:30 p.m. (local time) when the 45-year-old mayor, who was driving his vehicle, was attacked by a man with an unknown identity, according to the Ecuadorian newspaper ‘El Comercio’, which adds that according to the police chief from that area, they did not know if Ponce had been threatened.

“Goodbye, dear Eber. With absolute pain in my heart today I say goodbye to my friend and colleague, mayor of Arenillas. Without a doubt now you enjoy the presence of God, dear brother because you were an exceptional human being. I will always remember you with that smile and joy of living,” lamented the president of the AME.

“At AME, we will do everything necessary so that this case does not remain unpunished and so that local governments can work without fear, with the confidence that they are protected while they fulfill their mission,” the organization added.
