MADRID 2 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Supreme Court of Israel has endorsed this Thursday a controversial law that allows the Minister of Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, to draw the general lines of investigation of the Police, but has overturned part of the text, with which the ultranationalist politician sought to exercise greater control. power over the country’s security forces.
Thus, the approved text will make it easier for the minister to establish “fundamental priorities” within the framework of these investigations, but it will not pave the way for Ben Gvir to obtain greater “general authority” over the Police. The decision had five votes in favor to four, according to information from the newspaper ‘The Times of Israel’.
In this sense, the court has rejected regulatory aspects that would allow “the policies and principles of police operations to be outlined,” including their “priorities, programs and general guidelines.”
This is the latest measure of this type adopted by the Israeli Justice against the far-right Government headed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose interest in carrying out judicial reform has caused a crisis within the Government.
However, Ben Gvir has regretted the judicial decision and has assured that it “deprives the ministers of their authority.” “Justice once again turns its back on the population and the will of the voters,” he pointed out.
“The serious decision adopted by the Supreme Court leaves power in the hands of the Prosecutor’s Office and places the Attorney General above the Police. In a democratic State, the ministers determine the policies that govern police behavior, but this does not interest the Supreme Court,” he stated.
