MADRID 9 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The UN mission that examines compliance with Human Rights in Venezuela has recorded in the last two days 16 arrests of opposition political leaders, activists and even relatives of dissidents, among them the son-in-law of President Nicolás Maduro’s main rival in the elections. July, Edmundo Gonzálz.
The group has indicated in a statement that these arrests “represent another attack on the rights and freedoms of the Venezuelan people” and has linked them to the imminence of the demonstrations this Thursday and the presidential investiture on January 10, for which Both Maduro and González are preparing.
The president of the Independent International Investigation Mission, Marta Valiñas, has warned that “these arrests instill widespread fear in the population and prevent many people from expressing themselves freely or carrying out their legitimate work in defense of Human Rights.” In this sense, he has warned that both those who carry out the arrests and those who order them may be committing crimes.
The mission has “firmly” demanded that the Venezuelan authorities clarify “without delay” the whereabouts of all these people, as well as release “immediately and without conditions” all those “arbitrarily detained.”
