The UN denounces that the attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities contravene the laws of war

MADRID 29 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The United Nations has warned this Friday that the wave of attacks by Russian forces this week against Ukrainian energy facilities has put the situation of the civilian population at risk in the face of winter and denounces that these types of actions go against the fundamental laws of war.

This Thursday’s attacks have damaged facilities in at least thirteen regions, plus the city of kyiv, affecting more than a million people throughout the country, explained the spokesman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Jeremy. Laurence.

The spokesperson explained that since March, these types of facilities have been a constant target of the Russian Armed Forces, which “has caused foreseeable and far-reaching damage” to the detriment of the civilian population.

“As always, the most vulnerable – older people, low-income households, people with disabilities and internally displaced people – have been especially threatened,” lamented Laurence.

“As temperatures drop below freezing, and are likely to continue to drop, electricity and the services that depend on it are even more critical to the survival of civilians,” he warned.

Laurence has noted that these types of attacks focused on civilian facilities, including “elements essential for the survival of the population”, raise “serious concerns” about the respect for International Humanitarian Law by Russian forces.

“These recurrent and systematic attacks must be investigated and those responsible for serious violations must be held accountable,” demanded the spokesperson, who has again urged Russia to “immediately” cease attacks against this type of energy facilities.
