The UN denounces the worsening of health “vulnerability” in northwest Syria due to winter conditions

MADRID 28 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The United Nations (UN) denounced this Friday that health needs in northwest Syria have worsened due to winter conditions, which further aggravates the “vulnerability” of displaced populations as a result of the fighting that has lasted for more than one year. of a decade of war that has led to the fall of Bashar al Assad’s regime.

“There is a significant and continuing increase in influenza-like illnesses (ILIs) and severe acute respiratory infections (SARIs), since the beginning of winter, with consequent increases in hospital visits and increased public health concerns,” reads a study led by the Health Group of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Low temperatures, lack of adequate heating, and overcrowding in displacement camps are exacerbating the situation, while the risks of hypothermia rise with falling temperatures.

To address these problems, they have noted, “targeted interventions” are needed, such as better insulated shelters, heating and access to essential medical supplies.

Thus, the health crisis in northwest Syria remains serious. “Recent landmine explosions in Idlib, Aleppo and Hama have caused deaths and injuries, further straining the health system. On December 24, three explosions killed one man in Idlib and injured others. in Aleppo, including a child,” the UN detailed.

Another “critical” concern, they have noted, is the shortage of financing. An investment of 22 million dollars (about 21 million euros) is required to guarantee the survival of health centers.

The fall of the Al Assad regime has taken place as a result of the lightning offensive launched by jihadists and rebels, which caused a continued withdrawal of government troops, supported by Russia and Iran, until the flight on Sunday of the country’s former president since the year 2000 of the capital before the collapse of its forces.
