Biden delivers another $2.5 billion for the defense of Ukraine

The Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denis Shmigal, announced this Monday the delivery by the United States of 15 billion dollars (about 14.3 billion euros) of the profits obtained from frozen Russian assets.

The delivery, announced a few days ago by the Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelensky, is part of the 20 billion dollars (19 billion euros) agreed by the United States within the G7 initiative that contemplates a total expenditure of 50 billion dollars (47.8 billion euros).

“The corresponding agreement was signed by the Ministry of Finance of Ukraine and the World Bank,” Shmigal said. The funds, he explained, “will be used for social and humanitarian expenses.”

“We thank the United States and the World Bank for implementing and supporting the initiative that makes Russia pay for its aggression against Ukraine,” he said.

The G7 agreed in June of this year a loan to Ukraine worth $50 billion, financed with Russian assets frozen, most of them in European Union countries, which in October gave the green light to another of up to $35 billion. euros. Russia has promised to respond with similar measures.

In parallel, the outgoing president of the United States, Joe Biden, announced this Monday the delivery of another 2.5 billion dollars (about 2.4 billion euros) for the defense of Ukraine and the improvement of its Armed Forces.

“Since Russia launched its renewed attack on Ukraine in February 2022, the United States has mobilized the world to support the Ukrainian people, and one of my top priorities has been to provide Ukraine with the support it needs to prevail,” Biden said. in a statement released by the White House.
